Differentiated teaching is a pedagogical approach that recognizes and responds to different needs, interests, abilities and learning styles. It is very dynamic and flexible, and requires exceptional commitment and creativity from the teacher. That is why it has good results in practice, because it raises the quality of education to a new level.
Our teachers will apply a variety of differentiated teaching strategies, to ensure that each student progresses at their own pace and reaches their full potential.
The basic principles of this type of teaching include the following elements:
1. Getting to know the students:
Teachers must first of all get to know their students well, and this applies to their strengths, weaknesses, interests, as well as learning styles.
2. Adapting the content individually to each student:
Once they get to know their students, teachers are able to tailor the content to suit their different skill levels and interests. In practice, this means enriching the material for more advanced students or additional materials and support for those who face learning difficulties.
3. Different learning processes:
Not every child is the same, so they don’t learn new things in the same way. There are students who learn better through visual materials, while others acquire knowledge faster with practical activities. Also, some students are more comfortable with verbal instruction. Practice shows that pupils have better school results when they are given the opportunity to learn in the way that suits them best.
4. Grouping students by interests:
Thanks to this class, students can group in different ways depending on the task, such as working in pairs, small groups or individually. And the groups themselves can be changed to ensure that they are constantly receiving new perspectives and support.
Differentiated teaching helps students develop critical thinking, learn how to successfully solve challenges and problems, but also encourages them to collaborate with peers. That is why we at the Private Primary School Mihajlo Pupin will apply it through our curriculum.
